A Day in the Life of a Vintage Seller

People often see the finished product. The beautifully photographed dress, the carefully wrapped parcel, the one-of-a-kind find sitting neatly on a website. What they don’t always see is everything that happens before that moment.

So today, I’m sharing a little behind the scenes of a typical day running Katie’s Vintage Corner and what life really looks like as a vintage seller.

Morning: coffee, checks and planning

Most days start with a cup of tea and a quick check of messages and orders. This is when I respond to customer questions, print postage labels and make sure everything that sold overnight is ready to package.

Vintage selling isn’t just about finding lovely items. There’s a lot of organisation involved. Stock tracking, packaging supplies, pricing decisions and planning what needs to be listed next. A quiet morning is often the best time to get those jobs done before the day picks up.

Mid-morning: the hunt for vintage treasures

This is my favourite part of the day. Sourcing.

Depending on the day, this might mean charity shops, car boot sales, antique centres or local fairs. Sourcing vintage is part knowledge, part instinct. You’re scanning rails, shelves and tables, looking past what’s obvious and spotting pieces with potential.

Sometimes you find nothing at all. Other days you find one perfect item that makes the whole trip worth it. That unpredictability is part of the magic.

When I’m sourcing, I’m always thinking about quality, condition and whether a piece will genuinely be loved in its next home.

Afternoon: cleaning, checking and photographing

Once I’m home, every item is carefully checked over. Vintage pieces deserve attention.  Homeware is gently cleaned and examined for any flaws.

Photography comes next. Good photos matter, especially when selling vintage online. I aim to show items clearly and honestly, including any signs of age. Vintage should never be a surprise when it arrives.

This part of the day is quiet and focused. It’s where each item really starts to become part of the shop.

Late afternoon: listing and storytelling

Writing listings is more than just measurements and materials. Each piece has a story, even if it’s a subtle one. Where it might have been worn. How it would fit into a modern wardrobe or home.

This is also when I work on blog posts, social media or updating the website. Sharing knowledge and behind-the-scenes moments helps customers feel connected to what they’re buying, not just clicking “add to basket”.

Evening: packing orders and reflecting

Orders are carefully wrapped, bubble wrapped floated in void fill. Vintage items have already lived a life, and I like to make sure they arrive safely ready for their next chapter.

Before the day ends, I usually review what sold, what needs restocking and what I’d like to focus on next. Some days are busy, some are slower, but every day moves the business forward in its own way.

Why I love selling vintage

Vintage selling isn’t fast fashion or mass production. It’s slower, more thoughtful and rooted in appreciation for craftsmanship and individuality.

Every piece at Katie’s Vintage Corner is chosen by hand, with care and intention. That’s what makes this work so rewarding.

If you’ve ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes, I hope this gave you a little glimpse into the daily rhythm of a vintage seller’s life.

Thank you for being part of it.
