Denby Pottery Collection

Discover our collection of vintage Denby pottery, made in Derbyshire and recognised for its distinctive glazes, durable stoneware and unmistakably British approach to everyday design.

Denby's story began in 1809, when local entrepreneur William Bourne recognised the quality of the clay found around Denby in Derbyshire and established pottery production there. Remarkably, Denby pottery is still produced on the same historic site more than two centuries later.

Over the decades, Denby moved from practical stoneware into increasingly design-led tableware. The post-war period produced some of the company's most collectable ranges. Greenwheat, introduced around 1956, used minimalist hand-painted decoration influenced by Japanese pottery; Chevron followed around 1962, while the bold Arabesque range appeared around 1963. Later, Imperial Blue, introduced in 1989, became one of Denby's most recognisable and enduring designs.

Part of Denby's appeal lies in the way it was made. The company has continued to use locally sourced, iron-rich Derbyshire clay alongside skilled processes including shaping, fettling, glazing and firing. Denby states that more than 20 pairs of hands can be involved in producing an individual piece.

Our collection may include vintage Denby casseroles, serving dishes, mugs, jugs, bowls, tableware and discontinued patterns, ranging from familiar classics to less frequently encountered designs.

Vintage Denby is particularly rewarding to collect because pieces were designed to be used rather than merely displayed. Individual items can also provide replacements for incomplete services, while mixing different vintage Denby ranges can create an eclectic collection of British pottery.

Where possible, we research each item's pattern, approximate date and backstamp, with detailed photographs, measurements and condition information provided in individual listings.
