Long before mass-produced wall décor, pictures and textiles were often created, stitched, painted or framed to become a lasting part of the home. Tapestry, needlepoint, embroidery and cross-stitch have particularly long decorative traditions, with techniques and fashions changing considerably over the centuries.
During the 19th and 20th centuries, needlework became an especially popular domestic art. Kits and printed patterns allowed skilled home stitchers to create everything from traditional floral studies and landscapes to wildlife and more modern designs. Today, these handmade pieces have an appeal all their own, with the hours of work contained in a finished picture making each one quite different from modern printed decoration.
Vintage framed art can be equally varied. Our collection may include original paintings, watercolours, prints, textile pictures, tapestry, cross-stitch, embroidery and unusual mixed-media works, ranging from traditional landscapes and wildlife to abstract and mid-century designs.
Frames are also part of a piece's history. Older wooden, gilt and decorative frames can show signs of age and use, and in many cases these small imperfections add to the character of vintage artwork rather than detracting from it.
Where possible, we research artists' signatures, inscriptions, techniques, approximate age and provenance, although some vintage works remain unsigned or have stories that have been lost over time.
