Collection: J&G Meakin

J&G Meakin Collection

Discover our collection of vintage J&G Meakin pottery, one of the familiar names of the Staffordshire pottery industry and a particularly interesting maker for collectors of mid-century British tableware.

J&G Meakin was established in 1851 by brothers James and George Meakin in Hanley, Staffordshire. The company became a major manufacturer of affordable, durable earthenware, producing enormous quantities of tableware for both the British market and export.

While earlier Meakin designs often followed traditional floral and decorative styles, the company embraced a much more modern look during the post-war period. By the 1960s and 1970s, J&G Meakin was producing bold shapes and patterns that captured the changing tastes of British homes.

The celebrated Studio range is especially associated with this period. Its clean forms were paired with striking geometric, floral and abstract designs, and many of these patterns have become increasingly collectable examples of British mid-century design.

J&G Meakin produced far more than Studio ware, however. Across its long history the company made dinner services, coffee sets, teapots, serving dishes, bowls, jugs and everyday tableware in hundreds of patterns, ranging from traditional transfer decoration to the colourful designs of the 1960s and 70s.

The Meakin business eventually became part of the Wedgwood group, bringing an independent Staffordshire pottery history stretching back more than a century into one of Britain's largest ceramic groups.

Our collection may include J&G Meakin Studio pottery, vintage dinnerware, coffee and tea ware, serving pieces and discontinued patterns, including individual replacement pieces and matching sets.

Where possible, we research each item's pattern, backstamp and approximate production period. Meakin backstamps and pattern names can be particularly useful when distinguishing between the company's many ranges and designs.
