1930s Crown Ducal Art Deco Tube-Lined Poppy Floral Footed Bowl – 7"

A striking vintage Crown Ducal Ware footed bowl, decorated with genuine raised tube-lined floral decoration in a wonderfully bold Art Deco palette.

Measuring approximately 7" / 17.8 cm across, the bowl has a low rounded form raised on a circular foot. The exterior is decorated with large orange-red poppy-like flowers, smaller blue, yellow and orange blooms and soft green leaves, all defined by tactile raised dark tube-lining.

The decoration sits against an unusual mottled pink ground, which continues into the interior, with a contrasting yellow/gold-coloured rim completing the design.

The underside carries the printed Crown Ducal Ware – Made in England crown backstamp together with a small hand-painted blue decorator/reference mark.

Crown Ducal was the trade name of A.G. Richardson & Co Ltd, founded at the Gordon Pottery in Tunstall in 1915. The simpler Crown Ducal Made in England marks are associated with later production and were in use during the period when the company was producing its celebrated tube-lined Art Deco wares.

Crown Ducal registered its Red Poppy pattern No. 1915 in February 1931, confirming that poppy decoration formed part of its Art Deco output. However, we have not found sufficient evidence to identify this particular bowl as pattern 1915, so it is described as having stylised poppy decoration rather than assigning an uncertain official pattern number.

Although Crown Ducal is strongly associated with designer Charlotte Rhead, not every tube-lined Crown Ducal piece was designed by her. Specialist research records multiple tube-liners working at the factory, and this bowl does not carry a Charlotte Rhead signature or a pattern number that allows a secure attribution. We therefore offer it simply as Crown Ducal tube-lined ware.

Condition: Good vintage condition with age-related wear appropriate to its age. Please study the photographs carefully for the condition of the glaze, rim and raised decoration.
