Pair of Antique James Shelley Wild Decorative Handled Plates
A striking matching pair of early 20th-century English china plates, richly decorated with deep cobalt-blue panels, colourful floral reserves and extensive gilt detailing.
Each plate has a shaped square form with gently scalloped edges and small integral handles to either side. The border alternates between dark cobalt panels with ornate gilt decoration and floral sections featuring pink roses, blue and yellow flowers and scrolling embellishment.
The reverse carries a brown printed crown mark with the initials JSW and the wording English Make.
The JSW initials are documented as those of James Shelley Wild, who operated Wild Bros in Longton, Staffordshire. Wild Bros was established in 1904 by brothers Thomas Clarke Wild, James Shelley Wild and Herbert Augustus Wild. After the other brothers retired from the partnership, James Shelley Wild ran the business alone from 1916. The Potteries
The style of JSW crown mark found on these plates is documented as being used approximately 1922–1927, providing a useful dating range for the pair. The Potteries

A little maker history
Wild Bros manufactured china at the Edensor and Salisbury Crown China Works in Longton between 1904 and 1927. Contemporary records show the company producing decorated tea and breakfast sets as well as other decorative china. The Potteries
James Shelley Wild should not be confused with Shelley China. The famous Shelley company developed separately from Wileman & Co and the Foley China Works under Joseph and Percy Shelley.
