Vintage JIE Gantofta Sweden ‘Karin’ Figurine by Edit Risberg – Scandinavian Ceramic

A charming vintage Swedish ceramic figurine “Karin”, designed by Edit Risberg for JIE Gantofta.

Karin is depicted as a young girl wearing a long, softly textured dress and a wide-brimmed floral hat. The muted cream, beige and pale yellow colouring gives the figure the wonderfully restrained appearance associated with Scandinavian ceramics of the period.

The identification is supported by surviving examples specifically catalogued as JIE Gantofta “Karin”, designed by Edit Risberg. Comparable examples measure approximately 22–23 cm high.

Edit Risberg joined JIE during the mid-1970s and worked for the company for approximately ten years, initially designing pots and vases before moving into figurines. A specialist Scandinavian dealer dates Karin examples to approximately 1980–1986, which is a sensible period for this piece.

The underside has the characteristic hollow construction found on these JIE ceramic figures, together with impressed factory markings.
