Pair Vintage Studio Pottery Marbled Glaze Bud Vases – 5.75"

A wonderfully decorative matching pair of vintage studio pottery bud vases, each standing approximately 5.75" / 14.6 cm tall.

The pair have classic rounded baluster bodies with narrow waists and generously flared rims. Their most distinctive feature is the unusual all-over cream, mushroom, taupe and deep brown reactive glaze, producing an organic marbled or stone-like pattern across both the exterior and interior.

The glaze varies naturally across each vase, so although clearly conceived as a pair, neither is completely identical. This irregularity gives them much more character than factory-perfect ceramics and makes them particularly attractive displayed together.

The bases are unmarked and have a relatively rustic finish, with visible glaze remnants and irregularities around the foot from manufacture. We have therefore deliberately not attributed them to a particular pottery or country. Comparable unmarked vintage studio pottery is normally catalogued by form, glaze and construction when the maker cannot be established.

The highly textured surface resembles a reactive/crawling glaze effect, where glaze movement during firing creates islands, pools and contrasting areas across the ceramic surface. Crawling can be deliberately exploited by studio potters to create highly individual decorative surfaces.

The earthy neutral colouring and sculptural forms are particularly evocative of mid-to-late 20th-century studio ceramics, although without a maker's mark we prefer not to assign an exact date.

Condition

Good vintage condition with age-related signs of previous use and display.

The undersides have a rough, irregular studio finish with remnants of glaze around the foot rims. These appear consistent with manufacture rather than later repair. Please study all photographs carefully, including the bases and rims, as they form part of the condition description.

Their neutral palette makes them surprisingly contemporary despite their vintage character. They're a lovely pair for dried stems or simply displayed empty as small sculptural pottery pieces.
