Vintage Folk Art Chip-Carved Wooden Lidded Bowl / Trinket Box – 7"

A beautifully decorative vintage turned wooden lidded bowl or trinket box, measuring approximately 7 inches across and featuring an intricate hand-carved geometric design.

The lid is the star of the piece, with a central turned wooden knob surrounded by concentric rings of chip-carved triangles, fan-shaped leaves and repeating geometric motifs. The scalloped outer edge adds another layer of texture, while the darker aged finish contrasts beautifully with the lighter exposed carving.

Inside, the bowl has been smoothly turned and left largely undecorated, allowing the natural grain of the wood to show.

The carving is strongly reminiscent of Central and Eastern European folk-art treen. Similar vintage pieces are described as Romanian, Transylvanian and Slavic, but because this example has no maker's mark, label or country-of-origin mark, I would not attribute it to a particular country as fact.

There is also an interesting parallel with Polish Zakopane/Podhale chip carving, where turned wooden vessels were decorated with radial rosettes, saw-tooth triangles and other geometric motifs. A documented 1960s–80s example uses many of those same decorative ideas, although that does not prove this piece is Polish.
