Vintage Indian Brass & Enamel Floral Floor Vase – 18" Statement Piece

A striking vintage Indian decorative vase, standing an impressive 18" / approximately 46 cm tall, with an elegant elongated form and dramatic flared trumpet top.

The vase combines dark patinated brass-toned metalwork with a warm pearlescent cream ground decorated with bold stylised flowers and foliage. Rich shades of ruby red, cobalt blue, pink and emerald green are outlined in dark relief, giving the decoration a wonderfully graphic appearance.

The central body has a rounded baluster form decorated with large stylised flowers and foliage, while a further floral motif decorates the upper neck. The pedestal base continues the botanical theme with trailing leaves and vines.

Perhaps its most distinctive feature is the large dark brass trumpet-shaped mouth, which opens into a dramatic waved and ruffled rim. The metal interior retains visible circular turning marks, adding another interesting textural element to the construction.

The combination of brass, coloured floral decoration and elongated pedestal form is characteristic of decorative metalware produced in India during the mid-to-late 20th century, much of which was made for the international decorative and export market. Comparable Indian brass and enamel floral vases are generally dated broadly to the 1960s–1980s.

The vase is unmarked, so we have deliberately avoided attributing it to a particular workshop or region of India. The cream-coloured sections have a distinctive pearlescent appearance, but without further material testing we would not describe these as mother-of-pearl or another specific material.

Condition

Good vintage condition with age-related patination, surface marks and wear consistent with previous display and use. The darkened metal finish has natural variation rather than a completely uniform appearance.

At 18 inches tall, this is a substantial decorative piece with enough scale to work particularly well on a floor, hearth, console table or as part of an eclectic mid-century, bohemian or maximalist interior.
