Vintage Mason’s Ironstone Brown Velvet Hydra Jug – 5.5" Hand Painted

A beautiful Mason’s Ironstone Hydra jug in the Brown Velvet pattern, made in England and decorated with a wonderfully rich combination of chocolate brown, warm ochre, muted green and gold.

The distinctive Hydra form features a faceted body, sweeping handle and dramatic shaped rim, all finished with gilt detailing. The floral and scrolling decoration continues around the body and rim, giving the jug plenty of interest from every angle.

The base carries the Mason’s Ironstone – Made in England – Brown Velvet – Printed and Hand Painted backstamp.

The Brown Velvet pattern was produced over a long period. Importantly, the particular backstamp on yours corresponds with later Brown Velvet production: an established transferware archive documents Brown Velvet pieces carrying the “Printed and Hand Painted” wording as c.1980s. I would therefore date yours to approximately the 1980s, rather than the 1930s dates sometimes attached to Brown Velvet online.
