Charming pair of vintage Nepalese folk dolls, approximately 8 inches (20 cm) tall, handcrafted from wood and dressed in traditional textile clothing.

The figures appear to represent a Newari/Newar couple from Nepal's Kathmandu Valley. The woman's clothing is particularly helpful in identifying the tradition: museum-documented Newari dolls wear a black sari with red border and contrasting shawl, closely resembling the costume represented on this figure. Museums Victoria Collections

Both dolls feature hand-painted wooden faces, carved wooden hands and feet, fabric costumes and individual wooden display bases. The female figure has moulded/painted black hair with a distinctive red centre parting, while the male figure wears dark striped clothing with a patterned fabric head covering.

Traditional costume dolls have long been produced in Nepal as decorative souvenirs representing the country's different ethnic communities and regional dress. Historic Nepalese examples were also made carrying miniature tools associated with everyday occupations. National Archives Digital Repository

Comparable vintage Nepalese wooden costume dolls dating from around the 1970s are held in museum collections, including an approximately 20 cm example in Museums Victoria. Museums Victoria Collections
