A wonderfully characterful vintage lampworked glass rabbit, attributed to Pirelli Glass of Potters Bar, England.
Standing approximately 6 inches tall, the rabbit has an extraordinarily expressive design with oversized applied white ears, a clear smoky-grey glass body, white gloves, black shoes, an applied bow tie and buttoned white waistcoat.
His face is individually worked with applied glass eyes, pale cheeks and coloured muzzle details, while one hand holds a long curling dark glass walking cane.
Pirelli Glass was established in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, in 1945 and became particularly well known for its imaginative and humorous lampworked glass animals. Early glassworkers included Edward Robbins, Edward Maugham and William Michael Dunlop.
Rabbits are documented in Pirelli's 1959 catalogue, where they were produced in different sizes at the Potters Bar works. Many of Pirelli's animal designs from this period are associated with glassmaker Edward Robbins. Glass Catalogue
A surviving vintage example specifically described as a Pirelli Glass “Walking Rabbit With Cane” provides a particularly close subject comparison for this figurine.
As this example no longer carries a manufacturer's label, the Pirelli identification is presented as an attribution based on documented comparable pieces, rather than as a signed or labelled example.
