This vintage Rye Pottery pomander pot is decorated with a floral design and finished with a pierced lid, allowing fragrance to pass through when used with potpourri. At just 3 inches high, it is a compact decorative piece with a practical purpose, as well as an example of English pottery made for the home.
Rye Pottery has a long history in East Sussex, with its roots reaching back to the late eighteenth century. In 1947, brothers Walter ‘Wally’ Cole and John ‘Jack’ Cole reopened the pottery after the Second World War, bringing a fresh, design-led approach to traditional English ceramics. Their work helped establish Rye Pottery as an important name in post-war British design, and pieces were shown at the 1951 Festival of Britain. The family business became known for its distinctive forms and hand-applied decoration.
This small floral pot reflects the decorative side of Rye Pottery’s output. Its pierced lid makes it recognisable as a potpourri or pomander pot, suitable for displaying potpourri or simply enjoying as a collectable piece of English pottery.
