A characterful vintage Welsh studio pottery lidded jar, wheel-thrown in speckled stoneware and finished with warm, earthy decoration. 3" height

The rounded body retains pronounced horizontal throwing rings, giving the surface a wonderful tactile quality. A soft oatmeal-grey glaze provides the background for freely brushed iron-brown leaf-like decoration, with natural variations in colour and texture created during firing.

The original fitted lid has a low domed profile with a substantial ring-shaped knob, continuing the restrained functional character of the piece.

The underside retains its original impressed pottery mark incorporating the words “Pottery” and “Wales”. The full pottery name has not yet been securely identified, so no specific Welsh workshop is attributed.

Welsh studio potteries have a strong tradition of producing functional wheel-thrown stoneware, including domestic jars, jugs and other everyday forms decorated with iron-rich brushwork and natural glazes. Casgliad y Werin Cymru
